Sibuya Game Reserve
Winter this year seems to have been colder in bursts than usual! Heavy snowfalls on the mountains in the hinterland have caused us to shiver on occasion as icy winds from the north have sent us scurrying to grab our jackets. On colder nights, guests in RIVER CAMP have enjoyed the luxurious warmth of the new fireplaces in their cosy tents.

Bird Watching
Birding
Guests at River Camp were fascinated by a unique experience... a breeding pair of Green Wood-Hoopoes (Phoeniculus purpureus) who made their nest in a hole in a dead tree stump adjacent to the Lapa deck. Guests could literally have a "bird's eye view" of the daily proceedings.

Sibuya Game Reserve
Truly spectacular at the moment and especially where the two are intertwined, are literally banks of sky-blue Plumbago and mauve Morning Glory.

The addicts spent a day visiting two fantastic game parks in the Port Alfred area for some pre race filming with the Wild Racers TV Crew. Gambet, the friendly Giraffe, Rhino's, Elephants and plenty of other wild life made for a stunning day out.

Sibuya Game Reserve
The most noteworthy sighting during early December was by our newly arrived guide, Chris Ovens. While out with his guests, he spotted a raptor without a tail and wondered how this had happened. Luckily he had his camera handy and took a photograph because he was not sure of what he was seeing, only having arrived from up north a day or two before, he was not familiar with our local birds. Checking facts later, he was amazed to note that the bird was a BATELEUR (Terathopius ecaudatus) and indeed a juvenile but way beyond its “normal” range!

Luxury Accommodation
Not all South African game reserves have all the desirable qualities that make up the perfect safari: a riverine jungle full of birds and monkeys, grazing land, expansive views and the Big Five, but Sibuya Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape has it all. And it's the only SA reserve where guests are transported to their luxury tented camp by boat.

Bateleur Eagles
Birding
Causing a great stir at Sibuya at the moment are a "pair" of immature Bateleur Eagles (Terathopius ecaudatus). The Eastern Cape used to be part of their range but they disappeared years ago, so the Rarities Committee are also extremely excited by their appearance here on the 4th December 2011!

Crowned Eagle
A wonderful sighting recently was had by guests who came across a Bushbuck carcass on which a Crowned Eagle was feeding. An uncommon photographic opportunity for all.
